To use the Van Vlack Lab facility or Hanawalt XMAL, all users need to create a Facility Online Manager (FOM) account. You will get access to the lab after being trained on the instrument by the MSE tech staff.
The characterization lab (room 2224) contains a wide variety of materials characterization apparatus, including microscopy, mechanical testing, calorimetry, and spectroscopy. The Hanawalt diffraction lab (XMAL/room 2219) contains x-ray equipment. The sample preparation lab (room 2231) contains equipment for sample preparation, including a machine shop, mounting press, grinder/polisher, casting, and heat-treatment furnaces.

There is a waiting list available for times when the schedule is full. If you are anxious to use an instrument but no time is available, add your email to the waiting list. If you can’t cancel your session in time or you finish early, please email the users on the waiting list informing them of the instrument’s availability (include date and time).
