There are many aspects of the ways things break that are still not well understood in a fundamental physical way. Some of these problems arise due to the ways materials under stress can rearrange their molecular structure. Other problems arise due to dynamic effects that occur when cracks propagate at high speeds. Here I explain some of my research in language which I hope is accessible to anyone with sufficient curiosity. Of course, remember what happened to the cat....
