Operating the Teledyne-Taber Shear-Scratch Tester

  1. First, assemble the scratch tester. This can be done by screwing the lever support into the base of the tester. The large lever then slides onto the support. Using the small hex wrench you can tighten the diamond tip into the lever. The diamond tip is protected with a red sleeve. Once the tip is in the lever be careful of the tip and what it is resting on. An alternate test tip is the flat blade like tip which slides the slot on the lever. This can also be tightened with the small hex wrench.

  2. After deciding how much weight you want to test with place the weights on the lever appropriately.

For 0-500g use only one weight. Place this weight so that the far right marks the desired weight. For 500-1000g place one weight on the mark to the far right and adjust the second weight as you would for the 0-500 range.
  3. Lastly place you sample on the rotating disk and press the button to the right. You must continue to depress the button for the disk to rotate.
